Berlin in commemoration mode: Senate debates terror and civil servant pension
The anniversary of the devastating Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th dominates today's meeting of the Berlin Senate. Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) presents a balance of the extensive police operations that were used at the memorial events and the various demonstrations for Israel and Palestine. A total of over 2,000 police officers from different federal states ensured security in the capital to counteract possible escalations.
The Senate also advises a draft law to extend working life for Berlin officials from 65 to 67 years, in response to the chronic lack of personnel in the administration. It is striking that Berlin is the last federal state that has not yet been adjusted to the age of retirement. A decision of the Senate is necessary before the draft law is brought to the state parliament. The financial planning of Berlin for the years 2024 to 2028 is also on the agenda, but in this step only basic lines are demolished. For more details, see the current reports on www.welt.de .
