Berlin: Common action for species protection on the Pfaueninsel - Berlin facilities are committed to endangered wild plants.
according to a report by www.berliner-woche.de, three Berlin institutions are strong for species protection. The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG), the Botanical Garden of Berlin and the Nature Conservation Foundation Berlin (SNB) have teamed up to preserve wild plants threatened on the peacock island from completely disappearing in Berlin.
The peacock island is the ideal area for these red list species, since the lean soil is particularly suitable for offering these local Berlin plants a shelter. Many Berlin plants are threatened because their habitats gradually disappear. Nutrients from the air change meager and sandy soils, which overgrown lean grass and lets light forests become darker. The SNB coordination office takes care of more than 280 plant species in the entire Berlin city area as well as the occurrence and existence of endangered plants.
The joint action on the Pfauenins island provides the settlement of highly threatened plant species to offer them a new home. The Dahlemer Saatgutbank of the Botanical Garden has existed since 1994 and is the oldest wild plants sowing bank in Germany. There, the seeds of endangered and rare wild plants are collected, increased and re -extended for species protection projects such as that on the peacock island. Such actions must be accompanied scientifically so that they are successful in the long term.
