Berlin calls for a time framework for repetition of the Bundestag election to avoid Advent season

The Berlin election manager Stephan Bröchler asked the Federal Constitutional Court to repeat the judgment on the repetition of the Bundestag election in 2021 in such a way that it does not fall into the Advent season, the Christmas season or the New Year's time. A repetition during this time could lead to a lack of election helpers, explained Bröchler in Karlsruhe on Tuesday. The presiding judge Doris König replied that the Senate would try to take this into account when accelerating the procedure.

According to the application, the repetition selection should take place 60 days after the judgment. A decision is expected in a few months.

The negotiation in Karlsruhe dealt with the breakdowns in the election on September 26, 2021 in Berlin, including long queues and missing ballot papers, as well as the legal consequences of these incidents. The background is an election examination complaint by the Union faction in the Bundestag. In their view, the election would have to be repeated in more electoral districts than decided by the plenary with the votes of the SPD, Greens and FDP.

It remains to be seen how the Federal Constitutional Court will react to the request of the Berlin election manager and whether the judgment on the repetition of the Bundestag election 2021 will be made in good time before the start of Advent.
