Berlin lack dormitories for students - solution is urgently needed!
In the new winter semester, more than 108,000 students started in Berlin. Unfortunately, 3,600 of them cannot be supplied with a dormitory. The Studierendenwerk Berlin demands grants for the construction of affordable dormitories. According to a press spokeswoman for the Studierendenwerk Berlin, there are 4,900 students in their waiting list alone. As of the cut -off date, however, there were 3,600 applicants without accommodation. The waiting time for an affordable residential area is currently up to three semesters. Students report that looking for accommodation in Berlin is difficult and many are faced with high rental costs. Some stay with their parents, while others accept long pendulum times. For those without family support, only the free housing market remains, which often brings high rental costs. In comparison, other federal states have a higher proportion of students who live in dormitories. The Senate Administration plans to create around 8,000 dormitory places by 2028, but according to the student union, this is not sufficient. In order to create affordable student living space, more dormitories in the sponsorship of the student union should be built and financed with grants. The Berlin Tenants Association suggests that apartments should not be rented out in misuse or expensive furnished. Flexibility and search in outskirts could also help to find accommodation.
