Berlin in 12th place: Cycling becomes an uncertainty trip!

Berlin, Deutschland - Berlin has suffered a bitter setback in the current ranking of the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) on bicycle friendliness and now takes 12th place out of 15 among the cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants. Two years ago in 9th place, the overall rating for the capital has deteriorated on the grade of 4.3. These results come from a survey carried out as part of the ADFC bicycle climate test, which took place from September to November 2024. Over 200,000 cyclists in Germany took part in the online survey, including around 7,500 from Berlin, who were to evaluate various aspects of bicycle friendliness, such as [rbb24] (https://www.rbb24.de/panorama/biebtrag/2025/06-radege--s-Siching- adfc-Bahrradfreitlich.html)

The first places in the ranking occupy Frankfurt am Main, Hanover and Bremen, whose grades are 3.5. In the survey, 88 percent of those surveyed stated in Berlin to feel unsafe when cycling, while 92 percent complained of frequent conflicts with car traffic. These figures illustrate the challenges with which cyclists are confronted in the capital. There are also different results in other cities in Brandenburg: Potsdam takes 11th place among 42 cities between 100,000 and 200,000 inhabitants with a grade of 3.8.

bicycle friendliness in numbers

The ranking also shows that Brandenburg an der Havel with a grade of 4.0th place out of 113 cities occupies between 50,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. Schwedt, on the other hand, ranks in 5.9th place among 245 cities between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants with a grade. In the same size class, Hennigsdorf, Oranienburg, Strausberg, Kleinmachnow and Teltow have comparable results that do better than Berlin.

Berlin 12 4.3
Potsdam 11 3.8
Brandenburg an der Havel 56 4.0
Schwedt 5 2.9

Eberhard Brodhage, chairman of the ADFC Berlin, criticizes the Senate's transport policy and warns of a continuing negative trend, should not change a course. It should be noted that the survey is not aimed at a representative cross-section of the population, but on a broad circle of frequent and occasional cyclists who actively participate in the evaluation of bicycle friendliness in their cities.

call to participate in the bicycle climate test

The ADFC bicycle climate test, to which the Federal Ministry of Transport also contributes, requires a minimum number of participants to achieve valid results. 554 cities have already collected sufficient votes for the ranking. However, numerous participation is still missing in cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, such as Eschweiler and Gera. This survey, which consists of 27 questions and five additional questions for smaller places, has the goal of evaluating the condition of the bicycle infrastructure and the safety of the paths. The results of each survey flow into the planning and improvement of cycling promotion and are an important indicator of the progress in the progress in the bicycle friendliness of the cities, such as [ADFC] (https://www.adfc.de/artikel/adfc-bandkradklima-Test-Noch- Mehr-nehr-st- 554-staedtte-In-Ranking) explained.

Participation in the survey offers cyclists the opportunity to raise their voice and actively influence traffic planning. Only through a high number of participants can the needs of the cyclists be presented more clearly and the requirements for a modern and safe bicycle infrastructure in the city of Berlin can be implemented.

Comprehensive information on the survey and the previous results can be viewed on the ADFC website: Bicycle climate test.
