A10 motorway at Werder blocked: roadway sags when the bridge drops

The A10 motorway between the Werder triangle and the Groß Kreutz departure is currently closed, as the road is sagged during demolition work on the motorway bridge via Bundesstraße 1 in Werder. According to Ralph Brodel, the spokesman for the Northeast branch of the federal government's Autobahngesellschaft, the roadway may still be released today, but this statement must be considered careful. The road towards the south of the western section of the Berlin motorway ring is free.

The sagging of the road was caused by complications when the bridge was demolished. In order to tear down parts of the bridge, steel sheet pile walls were embedded on the left and right of the lane into the earth, which were connected underground with steel rods. In this work, the ground between the walls has loosened, which led to the sagging of the road. Usually nothing loosens in such work, but in this case the bridge and the building fabric is obviously too old. The bridge, known as Bauwerk 56, was built in 1937.

It is recommended to avoid the area and use alternative routes to avoid disabilities. It is still unclear how long the locking of the Autobahn 10 will continue.

This incident illustrates the problems and challenges of maintaining old infrastructures. In order to avoid such incidents in the future, regular inspections and maintenance of bridges and other buildings are essential. The federal highway company is working on being able to repair the road as soon as possible and to be able to normalize traffic.
