Antje Töpfer: No permanent border controls for a safe Brandenburg

The debate about the security situation in Germany and immigration policy is taking up a new momentum. Antje Töpfer, the top candidate of Bündnis 90/The Greens for the upcoming state elections in Brandenburg, has clearly spoken out against permanent border controls. In an interview with RBB24, she said on Thursday evening that such measures would not only improve the security situation, but also bind the police resources that are urgently needed elsewhere.
The increased controls at the limits of combating immigration are ineffective in their opinion. Töpfer argues that police forces who are used at the borders would be missing to the same extent in order to maintain security in the country. "If we get the police to the borders and use it permanently, they are also missing in the country, in the area," she said. This strategy would ultimately endanger security in cities and rural areas.
The balance between security and freedom of movement
A central mental potion is to enable the security forces to fulfill their work efficiently and preventively. In her view of the terrorist attack in Solingen, Töpfer emphasized that absolute security could not be guaranteed in an open and diverse country like Germany. A modern and effective approach must aim to train police forces well, especially in the area of de -escalation. "It is necessary to enable the security forces to do their work as well as possible," said Töpfer. This also includes stronger integration of refugees to counteract potential radicalization.
In addition, Töpfer emphasizes the need to optimize and implement the existing legal framework. "Politicians have to get better in migration in the implementation of the laws that are already there," it explains. The focus here is on a proactive and solution -oriented approach to politics.
Another important concern for potter is mobility in rural areas. It is committed to a significant improvement in public transport that goes beyond the mere expansion of the railway lines. "Solutions could also be that the plus buses or call buses are expanded," she suggests. Good transport connections are necessary to increase the quality of life in rural areas and to promote participation.
coalition prospects after the election
For the period after the state elections, Töpfer is open to working with the SPD and optimistic that a coalition with the CDU is also possible. In their opinion, such cooperation could help manage the challenges described in security policy and local public transport together. Their approach shows the will to find solutions across parties in order to make Germany's future positive.
