The rose of the knife power in Berlin: Fire brigade raises the alarm
In Berlin, doctors and paramedics have a worrying increase in knife injuries. Neither the Berlin clinics - apart from the Charité - nor the health system reveal exactly how often such injuries had to be treated in recent years. But the alarming details about the attacks are drawing a clear picture of growing knife power in the capital.
The Berliner Zeitung turned to the fire brigade to learn more about the situation and received frightening numbers. In 2022, a total of 230 rescue operations were registered, in which the injury picture pointed out to stab or cut injuries by a foreign person. However, this data only illustrates part of the problem, since missions with unclear causes or self -harm were not taken into account.
terrifying increase in cases in 2023
In 2023, the number of rescue operations due to knife injuries increased to 294 - an increase of 64 cases compared to the previous year. Particularly striking: by the end of July this year, 234 missions were already counted, which corresponds to an increase by 84 cases compared to the same period of the previous year and clearly exceeds the figures from 2022.
The fire brigade uses operational codes to dispose the necessary rescue equipment such as ambulances or emergency doctors, which enables targeted evaluation. Nevertheless, this data must be considered with a certain caution. A fire brigade spokesman explained that the database would be influenced by numerous factors and would require a precise manual review of missions and patient protocols. In addition, many cases are not recorded if, for example, injuries go to the hospital or the injuries are only recognized there.
The knife attacks happen particularly often during the summer months when many people are outdoors. This tendency also corresponds to the increased number of police operations due to assault or predators this season. Die Charité meldete, dass sie im ersten Halbjahr 2024 bereits so viele Messerstiche wie in einem ganzen Jahr verzeichnet hat – 50 bis 55 Fälle.
alarming developments also at the national level
Similar trends were observed throughout Germany. In 2023, the Federal Criminal Police Office registered a total of 8951 cases of dangerous and serious bodily harm by knives (in the previous year: 8160 cases) and 4893 cases of robbery using a knife (previous year: 4195). In Berlin, the police documented 3482 knife attacks in 2023 - that is 165 cases more compared to the previous year. The Berlin police President Barbara Slovik noticed that non -Germans are overrepresented by the perpetrators. The violence tends to be young, male and non -German. This development prompted the domestic spokesman for the Berlin CDU, Burkard Dregger, to demand strict weapons controls. Special weapons control zones are planned, which should allow the police to control suspicions in order to enforce existing bans and confiscate illegal knives.
Dregger rejected the criticism of the left and the Greens of the planned measures. "It's not about new bans, but about enforcing the existing ones," he said. According to Dregger, the demand for more prevention and social policy is not sufficient to get the problem under control.
