Berlin (DTS news agency)-the federal government's transatlantic coordinator, Michael Link, expressed deep concern about the political stability of the United States after an attack on the former US President Donald Trump. This political instability could further exacerbate the existing polarization.
Link told the "Editorial Network Germany": "The insidious attack on Donald Trump threatens to take the already dramatic polarization between the political camps.
The relevance of this development should not be underestimated, since the Federal Government, due to the weakness of the incumbent President Joe Biden, is preparing for the possibility of a voting victory from Trump. Link emphasizes: "No matter what happens in November, we have to prepare for the fact that the requirements for Germany and the EU will increase for more personal responsibility." This shows that Germany and the EU may have to strengthen their own position if Trump returns to the White House.
Especially in relationships between Germany and the USA, Link sees an enormous challenge. He makes it clear that bidges take the importance of Germany and the EU seriously as a partner, while Trump places "significantly less emphasis on alliances and allies". A victory of Trump would therefore mean a significant change in transatlantic relationships.
The secret but intensive preparations of the federal government are already running for a possible Trump election victory. Link emphasizes the need for a shoulder closure of the democratic parties, political groups and political foundations: "I am regularly looking for this shoulder closure and have therefore also intensively networked with the professionally responsible colleagues in the CDU and CSU on the subject of preparation for a possible scenario Trump 2.0."
Link also pursues the goal of strengthening German contacts in both political camps in the United States. This is particularly necessary for the Trump-related Republicans. His connections extend to governors, parliaments deputies in the states and the US congress as well as to German business circles in the USA. Link said: "Where the German economy is strongly invested in the USA, it plays an enormous role. Local Republican MPs and governors therefore want anything but a trade conflict with the EU - even if they are currently supporting all Trump."
This development is particularly important because transatlantic relationships and the economic connections between Germany and the USA are at stake. A potential election victory of Trump could increase both political and economic tensions.
