Process against climate activist: Accelerated procedure extends

On Friday, a second accelerated procedure in connection with actions by the climate group "Last generation" began before the Tiergarten district court in Berlin. The accused Judith B., a mother of two from Berlin, has to answer for property damage.

After a first attempt failed two weeks ago, an accelerated procedure was now initiated again. But again this time the process was not as planned. Judith B. came with three defenders who pulled one application after the other. The defense argued that the case was not suitable for an accelerated procedure, since motivation is questioned and the damage actually incurred had not yet been clarified.

The crime occurred on April 22nd of this year when about ten climate activists targeted several noble boutiques. Among other things, the branches of Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana were smeared. The branch of the watch manufacturer Rolex was also sprayed. On a poster it was said: "We can no longer afford the rich."

The activists were extremely quick and used fire extinguishers to cover the boutiques with orange color. The pictures shown in the process gave an impression of vandalism. According to the investigation, Judith B. is said to have been troubled by the facade of the Rolex business and caused damage of at least 5000 euros.

accelerated procedures are usually intended for criminal proceedings with a simple situation, clear evidence and a confession. They should enable quick punishment, for example in the case of shoplifting. However, the Berlin public prosecutor decided a few weeks ago that they are increasingly acting in accelerated procedures against climate activists. So far, more than 2100 proceedings against climate activists have already been initiated.

The first attempt to condemn Judith B. as part of an accelerated procedure failed. The court found that a regular procedure was necessary due to extensive evidence. Other witnesses would have to be heard. Defense also considers the case unsuitable for an accelerated procedure.

The managing director of the damaged Rolex branch indicated that the damage incurred was around 68,000 euros. This includes, among other things, painter and electric work, cleaning costs and the repair of the shop window. In view of these figures, the defenders requested that the procedure be suspended in order to be able to deal with it. However, this was rejected by the judge.

The trial against Judith B. is to be continued on August 18th.
