American students start language course in Cologne - a year of transatlantic friendship

The transatlantic exchange: 34 scholarship holders enrich Cologne

In July 2023, the Carl Duisberg Center Cologne welcomed 34 American students who will take part in an intensive German language course. This measure is part of the renowned parliamentary sponsorship program (PPP) of the German Bundestag, which has existed for 41 years. The arrival of these young people not only reflects the continuity of German-American relations, but also emphasizes the importance of intercultural exchange in a time of global challenges.

The PPP aims to promote understanding and friendship between the USA and Germany. It is of great importance that young people from different cultures learn to respect each other and develop solutions together. Nicole Fernandes, the head of the Carl Duisberg Centrum, emphasizes: "The arrival of these American students is a strong sign of the ongoing friendship and cooperation between our countries." These interpersonal relationships are invaluable in today's world.

In the next two months, the scholarship holders will not only learn the German language, but also housed in host families, which gives them the opportunity to experience German culture up close. You can bring your impressions and experiences into the community, which in turn promotes intercultural dialogue. Educational offers of this kind not only help the students, but also strengthen understanding and acceptance within society.

The Carl Duisberg Centrum offers a total of 73 participants this year German courses in Cologne, Berlin and Saarbrücken. The program is also open to German professionals who are interested in an exchange. For the interested young people in Germany, the application deadline for participation in the summer of 2025 on September 13th. Those who want to apply can do so at www.usappp.de.

The arrival of the American scholarship holder marks more than just the beginning of a language course. It is part of a larger trend that underlines the need for global dialogue and understanding. In a world that is often shaped by conflicts and misunderstandings, the exchange of young people can make a decisive contribution to strengthening the relationships between nations and shaping common future
