Alarming conditions: more than half of the small waters in Berlin dry or unacceptable condition

Titel: Alarmierender Zustand: Viele Kleingewässer in Berlin sind in Gefahr Berlin – Alarmierende Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung des Bundes für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) Berlin zeigen, dass der Zustand vieler Kleingewässer in Berlin besorgniserregend ist. Title: Alarming condition: Many small waters in Berlin are in danger

Berlin - Alarming results of an investigation by the Federal Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) Berlin show that the condition of many small waters in Berlin is worrying. According to the "small water report Berlin", over half of the waters examined are either dry or only contain residual water.

The studies were carried out in the districts of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Pankow. Natural ponds, ponds or pushing, which are less than 10,000 square meters and could be potential habitat of amphibians, were taken into account. Garden ponds, on the other hand, were not included in the investigation.

About 23 percent of the waters are in an advanced condition of the silting up, which means that they have grown greatly. A bush was found in around 20 percent of the waters, in which there is no more water.

Excessive surface and water consumption as well as the construction of houses and streets contributed to the shortage of water. In addition, the lack of care of the waters is mentioned as another factor. Climate change and the low rainfall contribute to the tightening of the Situation. These developments threaten the biotopes and also have dramatic consequences for the animal world.

According to the results, less than half of the waters examined offer good living conditions for amphibians. Due to the strong decline in the amphibian population in Berlin, the BUND Berlin calls for an immediate program for saving 50 small waters and a stable financial basis for water maintenance by the district offices. The experts emphasize that it is not sufficient to renataturize waters, but that long -term financial resources have to be provided for care.

The alarming results show urgent need for action in order to improve the condition of the small waters in Berlin and to maintain an appropriate habitat for the amphibians. The BUND Berlin emphasizes that some waters are already lost, while others can still be saved. It remains to be hoped that the corresponding measures will be implemented quickly to reverse the negative trend and to preserve the diversity of nature in Berlin.
