Alarming increase in ATM blasts in Berlin!
The situation around ATM sprinkles in Germany is alarming. In Berlin in particular, the Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) described the drastic increase in these crimes as "worrying". While only four cases were reported in 2020, the number rose to 24 in 2023 and so far 39, which 14 were successful. These brutal attacks not only endanger property, but also life more uninvolved. Spranger calls on the banks to improve their security measures in order to make such crimes difficult. In this context, measures such as reinforced ATM housings and color cartridges that make banknotes unusable are urgently necessary. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the number of the blown up ATMs in 2023 dropped to 461, which, however, represents a decline of only 7.1 percent compared to the record year 2022. Nevertheless, the prey remained at a high level with 28.4 million euros, since money was stolen in 276 cases. Over 87 percent of the explosions came with fixed explosives, which not only causes enormous destruction at the machines, but also on surrounding buildings. The danger to residents continues to grow, since the perpetrators often act with great risk and alarming willingness to use violence, even if fewer and fewer gas solutions are used, which could be due to the higher failure rate.
