Cancellation of the planned journey: Baerbock and Szijjarto meet later
diplomatic relationships between Germany and Hungary on thin ice
Berlin - The cancellation of the planned journey of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to Budapest ensures tensions in diplomatic relationships between Germany and Hungary. The Hungarian side, represented by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, canceled the appointment at short notice, which confirmed the Federal Foreign Office in the evening. This development highlights the already tense situation between the two countries.
One of the central questions is the behavior of the Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán, who recently caused resentment with a surprising trip to Moscow. In this context, the planned meeting between Baerbock and Szijjarto would have been of great importance to discuss the latest developments and to clean up possible misunderstandings.
The Federal Foreign Office regretted the rejection of the trip and emphasized the importance of an open and honest dialogue between the two outdoor ministers. It is to be hoped that the planned journey will be made up for a later date in order to bring bilateral relationships back to a constructive level.
