In the afternoon of May 21, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred at the Wannsee S-Bahn station in Berlin. An 81-year-old woman was seriously injured. According to the Berliner police there was the incident at around 4 p.m. when the woman exit from a BVG bus and wanted to cross the crown prominent path towards Roneby Promade.

The injured was immediately taken to a hospital by rescue workers where they are treated inpatient. The police blocked the crown princess in order to carry out the rescue measures and the accident recording by the Commissioner of Police Directorate 4 (South).

frequency of traffic accidents in Germany

The incident in Berlin is part of a major problem that also affects other regions. In Hesse there are numerous traffic accidents every year that affect both drivers, cyclists and more e-scooter users. According to hessenschau.de a total of 208 people died in traffic accidents in the region-25 more than in the previous year. In 2019 there were even 224 fatalities.

These numbers illustrate urgency to improve traffic safety. Traffic accident statistics show that a total of 13,859 traffic accidents were admitted to the police in 2024 in the Southeast Hesse police headquarters, which is a slight decline compared to 2023 than 13,895. Nevertheless, the number of traffic fatalities rose to 25, which represents a worrying trend.

Special risks for weaker road users

It is particularly alarming that there were seven pedestrians and four cyclists among the road dead, which indicates a high risk of "weaker road users". The fatal accidents included eight within closed towns and 15 on federal and state roads. The Hesse also reports on an increase in accidents with e-scooters, while the number of serious bicycle accidents decreased.

The high incidence of traffic accidents, especially in urban regions, makes it clear that both education and preventive measures are urgently required. The police and local authorities face the challenge of not only avoiding accidents, but also to strengthen the feeling of security of the citizens.
