70 years of the Friedrich von Raumer district library: anniversary in focus!
On September 2, 2025, the “Friedrich von Raumer” district library on Dudenstrasse in Kreuzberg will celebrate a very special anniversary: it will be 70 years old. The library was founded in 1955 in a new building designed by the renowned architect Max Taut, an important representative of “New Building” in the 20th century. Taut, who also built the “Association House of German Printers” and the Max Taut School, developed a building complex that is now a listed building. His design provided space for the library, which was founded in 1850 on the initiative of Friedrich von Raumer - a lawyer and politician who supported popular education.
The anniversary program to celebrate the 70th anniversary takes place on “Open Monument Day”. On Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 12 p.m., the district library invites you to a lecture on the history of the house and the surrounding buildings. In addition, a guided tour will be led by architect Thomas d’Halluin, who will provide insights into the architectural features of the building. At the same time, the exhibition “70 Years of the Friedrich von Raumer District Library” will open. Admission to this event is free; advance registration is not required.
A long journey of education
The history of the library begins 175 years ago, when Friedrich von Raumer advocated establishing public libraries in Berlin. This initiative came at a time when city libraries were seen as a means of promoting education and social integration. Karl Benjamin Preusker, a pioneer of the library movement, emphasized the importance of city libraries in the development of general education. The focus was on promoting popular education, youth education and commercial training in order to respond to the challenges of a changing society characterized by industrialization and urbanization.
The “Friedrich von Raumer” library is one of the first four public libraries in Berlin and was part of this tradition that continues to this day. Although the democratic approaches to founding libraries were often met with resistance, the library movement was able to consolidate itself in the 19th century as an important cultural element of the city, providing access to education and promoting social engagement.
The anniversary program
The celebrations of the district library's 70-year history include a combination of lectures, guided tours and the opening exhibition. The presentation addresses the history of the library, its architectural value and the role it plays in the context of Berlin's educational landscape.
With its legacy and ongoing relevance in a rapidly changing world, the “Friedrich von Raumer” library represents an important part of the neighborhood’s culture. The event will not only honor the past, but also look to the future to see how libraries can continue to be relevant as places for learning and imparting knowledge.
