20 years of EU expansion: Europe festival at the border triangle near Zittau - Political picnic on April 27th

On April 27, a European festival will take place on the border triangle near Zittau (Saxony) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the EU expansion. This is the reason for this, the accession of the Czech Republic, Poland and eight other countries to the European Union on May 1, 2004. The festival is organized by the European Parliament's liaison office in Germany and the representation of the EU Commission, together with the European investment bank and other partners from Germany, Poland and Czech Republic. The program includes a political picnic, a balloon ride with a panoramic view of the landscape at the three -country point and a stage program with musicians from different countries.

On the political picnic, Saxony will participate Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer and the Saxon Minister of European Minister Katja Meier. Visitors can ask questions to various politicians, including MEPs and representatives of the EU Commission. In addition, a "European birthday cake" is cut.

On the opening day of the festival, the mayors of the city network "Kleine Dreieck - Bogatynia - Hrádek Nad Nisou - Zittau" officially open the festival and there will be greetings from various representatives. The stage program, which begins from 1 p.m., includes appearances by music groups from Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. There will also be information stands on European topics and the upcoming European elections.

The EU expansion in 2004 marked the accession of ten new countries to the European Union and led to an increase in EU citizens by around 75 million people. This expansion was the result of the political upheaval in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989/90.

The European elections will take place from June 6th to 9th and offers around 370 million people in the EU the opportunity to choose the new European Parliament. In Germany, the polling stations will be open on June 9th. The chosen MEPs will play a decisive role in the EU policy in the next five years.

Europe day on May 9 reminds you that Europe lives in peace and unity. The EU institutions in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg open their goals for tours and events on Europe.

Further information on the European Festival and the European elections can be found on the organizers' websites. The media representatives can contact various contact persons, including spokesman for the city of Zittau and representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission in Germany.
