100 years of traffic light: How Berlin's light revolutionized traffic!
On October 20, 1924, a small miracle of technology was set up at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, which has changed our daily life lasting: the traffic light. With the so -called traffic storm, a new era in the traffic regulation began when cars were still rare and horse -drawn carriages shaped the picture. To date, the traffic lights, which initially ensured effective traffic management, has not only regulated the flow of vehicles and pedestrians, but also revolutionized traffic safety.
Although the first electrical traffic light was installed in Berlin in 1926, Hamburg also claims part of the story with the first light sign in Europe, which was set up in 1922 on Stephansplatz. Historically, the idea for the traffic light was not purely German. It has its origin in Great Britain, where the first gas light was installed in 1868. This development led to what we know today as a natural element of the transport infrastructure through the introduction of electrical traffic lights in the United States. At Potsdamer Platz, a replica of the historic traffic light tower is reminiscent of the beginnings of this important invention that the traffic world has changed forever.
