Future of the Dublin Center in Eisenhüttenstadt wobbles!

Eisenhüttenstadt, Deutschland - In March, the "Dublin Center" in Eisenhüttenstadt was opened on the site of the central immigration authority. The purpose of this center is to accept refugees who cannot apply asylum in Germany. However, the new Brandenburg Minister of the Interior Rene Wilke (independent) questions the continued existence of the center and describes it as a facility from another time before the border controls were tightened. His goal is to check the meaningfulness of the center, since many people no longer get to Brandenburg due to the increased controls.

Wilke has emphasized that no decisions about the future of the center have yet been made. However, he sees it sensible to question the current circumstances. Incurrent infrastructural decisions that cause costs offer the right time for such a review. The center, which has a capacity of around 150 people, should enable the return of people who are registered in another EU country like Poland.

challenges in the Dublin system

The Dublin procedure regulates in which EU country asylum seekers have to apply. In recent years, however, the number of translations actually carried out has dropped significantly. In 2023, for example, 74,622 transfer were requested, of which only 5,053 were successfully implemented. In 2024, the countries agreed 44,431 back over, but only 5,827 actually took place. This shows the difficulties of the procedure that strongly depends on the cooperation of the EU member states.

  • 2023: 74.622 Translations requested, 5.053 carried out
  • 2024: 74,583 Translations requested, 5,827 carried out

Brandenburg's Ministry of the Interior has reported a so -called revolving door effect: Around 40% of the transferred sweeps quickly returned to Germany. This problem is further exacerbated by inadequate willingness to recording in many countries such as Greece and Italy, as well as frequently running deadlines for back over the situation. For numerous refugees housed in other EU countries, there are also unreasonable conditions that make return more difficult.

In the "Dublin Center" in Eisenhüttenstadt, asylum seekers usually have to remain up to two weeks until their future is decided. They are subject to the residence obligation and receive limited services. In comparison, Hamburg has already opened a similar center. Wilke and other politicians are calling for a fundamental review and restructuring of the Dublin system so that the current challenges can be managed more efficiently.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the political discussion about the Dublin Center and the Dublin process continues. Wilke will emphasize the need to update asylum policy and check whether the financial means can be used more effectively for other, meaningful projects. The challenges are great, but without a comprehensive cooperation and reform of the states involved, a successful coping with the refugee situation in the EU is hardly imaginable.
