Future of the Central and State Library: Berlin Senate favors Quartier 207 on Friedrichstrasse

The cultural senator Joe Chialo was positive about an interim report from Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH (BIM), which says that the building is legally, construction -based and economically suitable for use as a library.

The new building for the ZLB in Kreuzberg has recently been rejected to bring the two existing locations together in Kreuzberg and Mitte. Chialo hopes for parliamentary support, i.e. financial means, in order to be able to implement the project at the Friedrichstrasse location. It is still unclear what the financing of the building purchase and renovation on Friedrichstrasse could look like, since no funds in the household are intended.

The Senator, however, emphasized that the costs for a new building were significantly higher than the acquisition and conversion of the "Quartier 207". A final report on the location on Friedrichstrasse is expected on December 6th.

For the residents of Berlin, ZLB could be an enriching cultural and educational addition to Friedrichstrasse. The central location of the location could improve access to library resources and cultural events for citizens.
