Future of the airport region: municipal forum on growth and specialists
The district office Treptow-Köpenick from Berlin has pointed out an important invitation to the 7th local political forum, which is entitled "Economic Development in the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport Region". This event will take place on Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Dialogforum Haus, Mittelstraße 11 in Schönefeld. According to the information from Berlin.de, the forum by Helmut Barthel, the chairman of the municipal working group, is opened, which will emphasize the opportunities and challenges of regional economic development.
A central focus of the event is on the economic dynamics around Berlin Brandenburg (BER) Airport. Helmut Barthel underlines the need for close cooperation between the federal government, Berlin, Brandenburg and the municipalities to advance the region. Katrin Müller-Wartig from the Ministry of Economics, Labor, Energy and Climate Protection (MWAEK) will speak about the urgently needed specialist and labor security.
shortage of skilled workers and economic perspectives
The MWAEK specialist and labor strategy comprises three fields of action: education, holding and winning. One of the challenges that would like to go into the forum is the lack of applications about all qualification groups, a problem that is also confirmed by the more than 20,000 employees on BER. The new labor market study shows that despite a shortage of labor, the economy in the airport region is growing positively, with an average annual increase in the employment of over 5 percent between 2020 and 2023. Around 38 percent of the companies on BER expect further employment growth in the next three years, which once again underlines the importance of skilled workout.
The forum will present short articles on labor market trends and the skilled worker situation, enriched by current insights and projects for workplace development and commuter volume. After the thematic opening round, a panel discussion with representatives from business development, airport management and local interest representation follows.
the dialog forum as a communication platform
The local political forum has been an established format to strengthen the dialogue about the future topics of the airport region since 2021. The municipal working group Dialogforum Airport Berlin Brandenburg (KAG DF) has profiled itself as a communication and cooperation platform for the municipalities involved since 2006. Members of this community are the states of Berlin and Brandenburg as well as the counties and the airport operators.
In addition, the event is supplemented by current developments such as the expansion of regional and bus traffic as well as the improvement of transport links, which will make a decisive contribution to the further economic development of the region. These aspects were comprehensively analyzed by the Brandenburg business development agency and other institutions as part of the study situation.
To take part in the event, registration is required. In descriptive reports and informal exchange formats, participants can take the opportunity to exchange their experiences in the airport region and to discuss new approaches to solve the challenges in the field of specialists and labor market.
