Christmas magic on Ku'damm: Lights shine despite lack of money!

On Friday evening, November 29, 2024, the Christmas lights on Berliner Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstraße were switched on. The impressive 120,000 lights now illuminate the popular shopping boulevard between Breitscheidplatz and Berliner Schaubühne and from Breitscheidplatz to Wittenbergplatz every evening. This festive illumination is set on fire at 4:00 p.m. and can be admired by January 6, as rbb24 reported.

financing problems and limited lighting

This year the Christmas lights were financed exclusively by donations because the Senate did not provide any financial resources. So far, the City Berlin working group has come together 350,000 euros. However, 600,000 euros would have been required to realize the entire planned lighting until the end of the Kurfürstendamm, including festive figures. Therefore, only the route from Wittenbergplatz to Adenauerplatz can be lit for Christmas, which includes about 2.9 kilometers. Additional treatments, on the other hand, could expand the inspection to the Schaubühne, should be more donations, such as Tagesspiegel explained.

This year's lighting is magnificent, but without the large -format illuminated figures presented in previous years. In 2023, the Christmas light spectacle also received support from the Senate of 100,000 euros, but even with further donations of 330,000 euros, it was not possible to set up the decorative figures such as the snowman and the nutcracker. There will be no Christmas lights on the boulevard under the Linden this year, since not enough donations could be collected, as the district mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, contradicted.
