Tempelhof's Atelier Gardens: culture and sustainability in focus!
On November 11, 2025, district mayor Jörn Oltmann visited Atelier Gardens GmbH & Co. KG on Oberlandstraße, Tempelhof. Described as a cultural powerhouse with a sustainability spirit, Atelier Gardens offers a vibrant campus that fosters creativity and community. Oltmann emphasized the important role that this historic film location plays in the economic development of the district. The aim of his company discussions is to get in direct contact with the local companies and to gain insights into innovative projects.
The Atelier Gardens are characterized by an extensive range of events, including a popular open-air cinema. The first winter market with sustainable products and gift ideas will take place on December 13th and 14th, 2025. With an area of 2.5 hectares, the campus has a long history, which began in 1913 with the first film studio of “Literaria-Film” and was significantly influenced by the founding of Universum Film AG (Ufa) in 1917.
Sustainability in focus
Nowadays, sustainability is increasingly understood as a central principle of action. This was defined in particular by the Brundtland Commission of the UN in 1987, which describes sustainable development as meeting the needs of present and future generations. The term itself has a diverse history and was first formulated in the work “Sylvicultura oeconomica” by Hans Carl von Carlowitz in 1713, which was about the use of resources in forestry.
In the context of Atelier Gardens, sustainability is actively practiced. The organization has received numerous awards for projects that promote environmental protection and ecological regeneration. This initiative also reflects the increasing trend of companies viewing sustainability not just as a selling point, but as an integral part of their business practices.
The film industry and its contribution to sustainability
The film and media industry is also under pressure to comply with ecological standards. Films and series are responsible for significant resource consumption and CO2 emissions. A current example is the feature film “Mels Block”, which will be broadcast on ZDF in 2024. Measures such as waste separation and the use of porcelain instead of disposable tableware were implemented here to minimize the environmental impact.
In 2022, the industry committed to ecological action in order to secure funding applications. The 21 mandatory requirements include the use of green electricity and preference for train journeys for short distances. The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Fund also supports the training of green consultants in order to further establish sustainable practices.
Despite the challenges, the industry remains optimistic. The goals, such as reducing CO2 consumption to a maximum of 400 kg per minute of broadcast, show the will to strike a balance between creative demands and ecological responsibility. This is not only an important issue for the film industry, but also for society as a whole, where the principles of sustainability are becoming more and more important.
