On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, an online event entitled "UV radiation-protection for children in sun and shadow" takes place. The event is organized by QPK quality development, planning and coordination in the public health service and begins at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Debora Grosskopf-Kroiher, the head of the skin cancer prevention project the sun and we, will lead the participants from the protection of children's skin and eyes against UV radiation. This event is aimed at parents, specialist staff from daycare centers and primary schools as well as all interested people.

Participation in the event is possible via this link: Participation-Link . In addition, the event will be broadcast live in several institutions in Treptow-Köpenick, including at the Köpenick Library, the neighborhood meeting in the KiTa Knirpsenbude and in Stephanus on site in Friedrichshagen.

protective measures and learning content

As part of the event, protective measures for children are treated in their everyday life, especially in daycare centers and at school yards. The concern of the event is to raise awareness of the correct handling of UV radiation. This is all the more important, since UV rays can be harmful even with cloudy sky or in the shade of the skin. According to a comprehensive study, the use of sunscreen that contains both UV-B and UV-A filters offers protection, but not a complete protective shield. Some UV rays also penetrate into the skin through the cream, which is why the application should be carefully.

The “Clever in the sun and shadow” project, which has been active since 2015, pursues the goal of promoting knowledge of UV protection and the corresponding behavior in living environments of children and adolescents. It is a joint project in which the German Cancer Aid, the University Hospital and University of Cologne and the University Cancentrums Dresden are involved. The specific target groups of the project include daycare centers, schools and leisure facilities.

prevention approaches and information materials

A central goal of the project is to create uniform, scientifically sound health messages for skin cancer prevention. The focus is on an active address in different areas of life in order to influence the UV protection behavior. For this purpose, advanced training and manuals for multipliers such as educators, teachers and doctors are developed. The creation of target group -friendly information materials also plays a crucial role.

The correct use of sunscreen is also discussed. It is recommended to generously apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before sunbathing and apply it every two hours, especially after bathing. Sensitive persons should also be aware of the possible allergic reactions to ingredients in sunscreen, whereby no health restrictions available in the EU, according to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, are to be expected.

The combination of additional protective measures and an informed society is crucial for the prevention of skin cancer.
