A decline in house bans in Berlin outdoor pools: Numbers drop before Corona pandemic compared to previous years

Since 2018, the Berlin outdoor pools have imposed a considerable number of house bans every year. According to the data from the Berlin bathing companies and the police, the number of house bans and violent crimes has decreased compared to the years before Corona pandemic. In 2022 there were considerably fewer house bans than in previous years. A total of 133 house bans were pronounced, while there were still 432 in 2019 and even 572 in 2018. Even during the Corona pandemic in 2020 and 2021, there were almost as many with 71 and 79 house bans as last summer.

This year it is expected that the number of house bans will increase slightly compared to 2022. However, these figures are probably still significantly below the 2019 level. So far, around 80 house bans have been pronounced since May, and it is expected that around 160 house bans will be imposed by the end of the outdoor pool season. This is a little more than in the previous year, but still small compared to 2018 and 2019.

Most of the house bans were imposed in the summer pool Pankow (211), followed by the summer pool at the Insulaner (102), the summer pool Neukölln (94) and the Wilmersdorf summer pool (81).

The number of violent offenses in Berlin outdoor pools is also declining. Last year, a total of seven bans on assault, ten for insult and threats and two for sexual offenses were spoken. These numbers were also significantly higher before pandemic. However, there was a slight increase in cases of property damage, coercion and violations of the Narcotics Act compared to the period before pandemic.

In order to improve the security in the Berlin bathrooms and to be able to better recognize whether house bans have already been spoken to people, all visitors from the age of 14 have had to show their passport, ID card or student ID. The regulation applies to all baths and is intended to help the employees of the pool companies. The aim is to make the bathrooms more secure and more attractive for all guests and at the same time relieve the employees.

The current measures were taken after there were riots in Columbiabad in Neukölln and many pool employees were on sick leave. The bathroom had to be closed by Monday. There was also a brawl in the Kreuzberg summer pool.

The numbers show that the situation in Berlin's outdoor pools in relation to house bans and violent offenses is declining compared to previous years. The current regulations and measures should help improve security and offer guests a pleasant bathing experience.
