Commitment to the community: International young people maintain cemeteries in the district

On July 31, 2024, a special reception took place in the town hall of Reinickendorf, in which youth councilor Alexander Ewers (SPD) praised eight women and seven men from Egypt, Brazil, Pakistan, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Iran. These young people between the ages of 17 and 25 took part in the work camp of the ecumenical youth service to maintain cemeteries in the district. This is the third year in a row in which international young people work for the common good in Reinickendorf.

The group worked for two weeks under the guidance of employees of the district's district at various locations, including the "Old Institution Cemetery" on the site of the former Wittenauer Heilstätten. Here they campaigned for this place to remain accessible and maintained as a memorial as a memorial for the victims of Nazi rule.

In the second week, the young people devoted themselves to the Dorfanger Alt-Wittenau and the village church of Wittenau. They were also used at the Martin Luther Kirchhof of the Evangelical parish of Tegel-Borsigwalde to maintain war graves. This work helps to keep the memory of past times awake and to preserve the history of the region.

The commitment of these international young people shows how important it is to work for the community and to promote cultural diversity. Thanks to the youth city council of Ewers is a sign of recognition for their commitment and their willingness to contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Reinickendorf.
