Neukölln starts the conversion of Elbestrasse: Focus on foot traffic!

Elbestraße 11, 12045 Berlin, Deutschland - On July 7, 2025, the Neukölln district office presented the design planning for the redesign of Elbestrasse. This project is viewed as a model project for foot traffic in Berlin and aims to actively help shape the mobility transition. The redesign is based on a feasibility study that was carried out in 2024. The renovation measures are to begin from 2026, with an expected completion of the work in 2029.

An important element of planning is to increase the quality of stay for pedestrians. In addition, a variety of measures are planned that strive for accessibility in addition to improving traffic safety. The doctorate is also part of the project by qualifying for bicycles and adapting to climatic requirements. The main goal is the creation of a walk-in through-road and a bicycle traffic road that should offer both traffic types more space.

public participation and information event

On July 11, 2025, an information event will take place on July 11, 2025 in the multi-purpose building of the Elbe School. The doors will be opened from 5:30 p.m. There, citizens have the opportunity to learn more about the design planning and bring their opinions. This is part of a transparent participation process that began in November 2023 with a public participation, in which 66 participants and 141 contributions were received.

From July 16 to August 3, 2025, the planned designs can also be viewed and commentable online on the participation platform Mein.berlin.de. This form of citizen participation is of great importance for those responsible, since they want to obtain direct feedback from those who will be on the Elbestrasse in the future.

goals and classification of the project

The redesign of Elbestrasse is part of a comprehensive approach by the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, to significantly improve the conditions for pedestrians in the city. This is done in the context of over 29 million euros, which are intended for various model projects such as this. The focus is on improving quality of stay, traffic safety and accessibility. People in densely populated residential areas should benefit.

The planned measures include reducing high curbs, widening sidewalks and designing the streets with children and senior citizens. Furthermore, the use of the central island for foot and cycling is planned. One of the concrete goals is the creation of rainwater seepage areas to counteract urban sealing, and the design of school and neighborhood areas in front of the Elbe School.

The project represents an important initiative in the context of the traffic transition in Berlin and was expressly recognized by the Senate Department for Mobility as a model project for foot traffic. The implementation of this redesign is considered an example of future urban planning and sets standards for further projects in the capital.
