New museum in Marzahn-Hellersdorf: A historical jewel is being created!
On September 3, 2025, it was announced that the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Museum, which has been housed in the former village school at Alt-Marzahn 51 since 1999, will soon have a new location. The historic village school is located on the village green of Alt-Marzahn, in the immediate vicinity of a well-known post mill, a landmark of the district. The current permanent exhibition is entitled "Marzahn-Hellersdorf. District history(s) - From the beginnings to the large settlements" and can be viewed until November 2, 2025. However, after this date the old building will be abandoned.
The museum plans to move to the listed courtyard at Alt-Marzahn 23, the previous “KulturGut”. The “museum property” is being built there, which will not only offer modern exhibition and event rooms, but also prepare a new permanent exhibition on the history of the district. This process is supported by the renovation, which began in the summer of 2023 and is financed by the district's own funds and funding from the State of Berlin. In total, the district is investing almost 6 million euros in the project, with over 5.2 million euros coming from the “Social infrastructure measures in neighborhoods outside of urban development areas” program of the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing.
Planned openings and new exhibitions
On September 13th and 14th, 2025, the renovated rooms of the new house will be opened to the public for the first time as part of Open Monument Day. In addition to the new permanent exhibition, regular events, museum educational programs and special exhibitions will also take place here to enrich cultural life in the district.
In addition, a café in the front building is run by the Agrarbörse Deutschland Ost e. V., which will provide additional educational and cultural offerings. The new permanent exhibition will focus on themes that meet modern museum requirements, including the history of migration. This marks a significant change for the museum, which conveys over 11,000 years of history of the region from its rural beginnings to the large settlements of the GDR era and the transformation after 1989/90. The location in Alt-Marzahn will thus become the central cultural location in the district.
Renovation measures and architectural planning
The architectural planning for the renovation was carried out by Rhosho Architects. As part of the redesign of the former four-sided courtyard, not only two modern exhibition rooms are being created, but also a ceramics workshop and a larger event room. A new depot building is also planned to improve the inadequate storage conditions in the current facility.
Preparations for the opening of the new exhibition are already underway. The exhibition “Publishing activities in today’s Marzahn-Hellersdorf district” is planned, which deals with the history of publishing houses in the region. The development of newspapers and publications is covered from their beginnings in the early 20th century to the changes after the fall of communism. This exhibition will be on view from December 2, 2024 to November 2, 2025 and addresses important aspects of local media history, including the regional publishers who had their finger on the pulse.
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Museum is looking into an exciting future, will continue to be a place of encounter and education for the district's citizens and will keep the history of the region, its people and their development alive.
