New cycle lanes on Sonnenallee: Safe traffic expansion up to the district border
From mid-August 2024, Sonnenallee in the Neukölln district will be redesigned to improve safety for cyclists. The expansion includes the creation of separate cycle lanes in both directions, each 1,135 meters long. These new cycle paths will be directly connected to the existing cycle paths on Sonnenallee to complete the cycle path network in the district.
Security measures
The redesign stipulates that the existing car lanes will be retained. The new cycle lanes will be set up on the current parking lanes and separated from the car lane by “flex bollards”. Additional safety measures such as guide boys, thresholds and color markings will be used to protect cyclists, particularly at intersections where additional safety measures are required.
Aim of the measures
Jochen Biedermann, district councilor for urban development, environment and transport, emphasizes the importance of connecting cycle paths in order to create attractive alternatives to car traffic. The expansion of the cycling infrastructure on Sonnenallee will help create a safe route between Neukölln and Schöneweide, which leads via the Weserstraße cycle route to Hermannplatz. In addition, the Wall cycle path will be connected to the well-developed cycle path network.
Financing and completion of the renovation work
Financing for the expansion of the cycle lanes is provided by the special “City and Country” program of the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport as well as funds from the State of Berlin. The renovation work is expected to be completed in September 2024. Further information and the current implementation status are available on the following website:
