Mullah regime Iran: Journalists are waiting for judgment of the death judge

In Iran, two journalists, Nilufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, threatens the execution. The two were among the first to report about the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman had died in police custody after violating the Iranian clothing regulations. After Hamedi shared a photo of the grieving parents of Amini on Twitter, she was arrested. Mohammadi, who had reported on the funeral service, was also arrested. Both journalists have been in prison for more than 300 days and are waiting for their judgment.

The United Nations awarded the two journalists a few months ago with the UN Cultural Organization's press freedom price. In Iran, however, they were charged with "collaboration with the enemy state of the USA, a plot against national security and propaganda against the state". The judiciary confirmed the allegation again and now the judgment is being written. In the worst case, the two journalists face a death sentence.

In their reports,

Hamedi and Mohammadi had repeatedly discussed the discrimination against women in Iran. For example, Hamedi had written about women who were not approved as spectators in sports stadiums, while Mohammadi had made a Corona outbreak in the Ghaarhak prison. Both have already been banned and prison terms because of their critical reporting.

The allegations of cooperation with foreign states reject the journalists and their editorial offices. A former colleague in Tehran expresses the assumption that the judiciary and secret service want to set an example to intimidate journalists and to prevent the reporting on such cases.

The Situation in Iran remains tense. The moral police, which is responsible for the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, resumed their work and cameras were installed to monitor women in public spaces. Hamedi and Mohammadi are now waiting for the judgment of the "death judge".

It is worrying that journalists such as Hamedi and Mohammadi have to be detained and fear that they are being executed. The Iranian regime's attempts to silence reporting on human rights violations and discrimination must not be tolerated. The international community should raise its voice and put pressure on Iran to ensure the release and safety of these brave journalists.
