Michael Tsokos: Attached doctor in an interview - about Corona policy, Whitney Houston and new projects

Michael Tsokos, a renowned forensic doctor, headed the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Berlin Charité by the end of 2023. In an interview, he expressed concerns about the perhaps the political orientation of the Charité and emphasized his view that medicine should not be politicized. He criticizes the increasing loss of apprenticeships in the Corona period and describes the Charité as less personal and more fiscal compared to other institutions.

tsokos also spoke about the selection criteria for medical studies, which in his opinion should not only be based on high school grades. He emphasized the importance of practical experience and the spatial imagination for the medical profession. He also underlined that the access requirements should be revised because the Abitur average notes are unrealistically high.

In terms of apprenticeship at universities, Tsokos criticized that student training in forensic medicine was neglected and that the Charité had developed into anonymous operation. He mentioned plans to teach in Hungary because he continues to appreciate an intensive connection between lecturers and students, which he missed at the Charité.

tsokos also discussed the way medicine reacted to corona pandemic. He expressed concerns about the classification of causes of death in connection with Covid-19 and emphasized the need for a clear distinction between "with" and "with" the disease. He also confirmed his conviction that a more comprehensive and more differentiated consideration of the mortality statistics was necessary.

The forensic doctor emphasized the importance of imparting knowledge and transparency and found that the topic of death in society was increasingly present, but still a taboo. He explained that people had the right to be informed about the work of forensic medicine in order to understand how studies can help to clarify the causes of death and to eliminate misunderstandings.
