Climate protection and biodiversity combined: Görlitz bank as a pioneering project in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg
conversion of the street on the Görlitz bank promotes biodiversity and climate adjustment
An innovative measure by the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office has in the project competition "Regenial!" the Berlin rainwater agency received great recognition. The project to remove the road on the Görlitzer Ufer was recognized as one of ten winners.
The formerly completely sealed street on the Görlitz bank was successfully converted into a natural flower area with home species. On an area of around 1,000 square meters, there is now space for cycling and foot traffic that was previously used by cars. This redesign not only serves to promote green spaces in the city, but also impressively shows how measures for climate protection and climate adjustment can go hand in hand.
District Councilor Annika Gerold emphasized the positive effects of the project by explaining: "Our project on the Görlitz bank illustrated how climate adaptation and biodiversity can be harmoniously connected. Plants and the creation of new habitats to promote biodiversity.
The removal project was submitted by the Climate & International organizational unit and was able to prevail under 49 applications. The jury paid tribute to the innovative and sustainable redesign of the street on the Görlitz bank as an exemplary model for further city projects.
With this successful project, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office sets a sign of promoting biodiversity and climate adaptation in urban rooms. The removal on the Görlitz bank shows that even in densely populated cities, sustainable measures can be implemented to improve the urban climate and to support biodiversity.
