Now object: Metas AI use until May 26th!
META, the company behind the platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has announced plans to train its artificial intelligence (AI) with user data. Data use primarily refers to public content from European users who are older than 18 years. These include likes, comments, profile pictures and postings. Private chats via WhatsApp remain excluded from this data usage because they are end-to-end-encrypted and Meta has no access to this information. If a user wants to object to data use, this is possible until May 26th. Afterwards, Meta intends to use the collected data without renewed consent. So nobody has to give the consent to the use of their data, unless he actively acts against it.
The AI of Meta is already integrated into the products and is displayed by a small blue circle. A comparison with the competition shows that Meta has fewer users in Germany than, for example, chatt. The Federal Consumer Center has expressed concerns and sees this procedure a possible violation of European data protection law. For this reason, an injunction was requested from the Cologne Higher Regional Court.
object procedure explained
users who want to object to data processing can do this directly via Facebook or Instagram. The steps are simple: On Instagram you can get to the objection form via "Settings> Privacy Center> Submit Form". Facebook users can find the form under "Settings> Data Protection Directive> Contract" Submit form ". After the objection, the users receive a confirmation email from Meta.
With WhatsApp, on the other hand, there is no possibility of contradiction, since the application does not use public data. Meta's data protection information states that a contradiction once expressed does not have to be pronounced again as long as the accounts are linked. A separate contradiction is required for unmistaked accounts. Users are advised to repeat their decision, even if an objection has already been filed.
Legal steps and consequences
If users see their contradiction rejected or discover personal data in AI-generated content, various options are open to you. This includes deleting previous contributions or closing your accounts on Facebook and Instagram. You can also file a complaint with the data protection authority or defend yourself legally against meta. Even if users do not have Facebook or Instagram accounts, they still have the option of objecting. Meta also uses training data from third -party providers who may come from the Internet.
Developments related to data use and the AI of Meta raise many questions about data protection. For further information regarding the legal basis of data protection in relation to AI, users can visit the website of the Baden-Württemberg data protection.
