Heat protection for homeless: emergency accommodation offers withdrawal in front of the summer heat

Hit emergency accommodation for homeless people in Berlin

homelessness is an urgent problem that is becoming more and more present, especially in large cities like Berlin. Especially in summer, when the temperatures rise, homeless people suffer from the heat and the aggressive sunlight. In order to help you during this difficult time, the International Bund has set up the first heat out accommodation in cooperation with the Senate and the district of Berlin.

The rash of heat on Kurmärkische Strasse in Schöneberg is the first facility of this kind in Berlin and has received a lot of media attention last year. Other countries, including Spain, have made inquiries about the model of Berlin because the heat waves also increase in these regions.

In the summer months, up to 60 people can find peace every day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the accommodation premises. There you have the opportunity to shower to wash your laundry and receive three meals, including a warm lunch. Samples of sunscreen and hygiene products are also offered. In addition, visitors can fill their drinking bottles with water before they go back onto the street.

The main users of the accommodation are women from Eastern European countries who work on the street in Schöneberg at night. For them, the homicide accommodation is an important point of contact, as they often consume drugs or drink alcohol during their work in order to be able to deal with the hardships better. As a result, they can hardly perceive thirst and other physical needs.

The Hitzenot accommodation project was financed by the Senate and the district and is based on the heat protection plan for Berlin, which was developed by experts in 2022. This plan describes how hospitals, retirement homes and other facilities in the city are supposed to trade in high heat. It was created in France after the century summer in 2003 when heat waves demanded hundreds of human life and also led to increased sensitization in Germany.

Homeless people are particularly affected by the effects of extreme heat, since they often have to rest on non -isolated soil during the night. The severity of liquid and the lack of air conditioning make it difficult for you to find sufficient relaxation. That is why there are other organizations in Berlin that offer retreats for homeless people in the summer and are supported by the Senate with the heat protection plan.

It is important that heat protection for homeless and other endangered groups is reinforced. The responsibility for this lies not only with the Senate, but also with the districts. It is about the protection of human life, which is why all institutional actors have to work together in order to be able to offer decentralized help.

The heat out accommodations and the city mission heat bus are important steps to help homeless people with great heat periods. However, it must continue to be worked on in order to improve the care and protection of this vulnerable group.
