Heat in the city: New construction required for more heat protection
The heat-related building transition: A call for change

Current record temperatures are blanketing Germany with oppressive heat. Urban areas in particular are suffering from the consequences of high temperatures. The asphalt, masonry and glass facades of the buildings store the sun's rays during the day and do not give off heat even in the evening. These health challenges are now also drawing politicians' attention.
Are we meeting the heat challenges?
The chairwoman of the German Social Association (SoVD), Michaela Engelmeier, has a clear demand: urban planning must be reformed. “Heat protection is a task for society as a whole,” explains Engelmeier. She emphasizes that the construction industry in particular plays a responsible role in this regard. In order to improve the quality of life in cities, we must pursue innovative approaches.
Health risks for vulnerable groups
Especially now, when temperatures can become a serious threat for many people, it is important to take the needs of vulnerable groups into account. Older people, people with chronic illnesses and infants and young children are particularly at risk. For these groups, high temperatures can cause serious health problems.
The importance of sustainable building
“We need more air and greenery in our cities,” Engelmeier continues. She suggests switching more to sustainable materials. Wood, clay and new technologies that absorb heat could be the key to adaptable construction that is not only ecologically but also socially acceptable.
Practical measures and calls to action
In addition, Engelmeier is calling for more drinking fountains to be installed in city centers to provide the population with an easy way to drink fluids during heat waves. On the SoVD campaign page (www.sovd.de/wärmeschutz) you will also find useful tips and information for better heat protection.
The discussion about heat protection is not just a local challenge, but rather a challenge for society as a whole that requires a rethink and innovative solutions in the construction industry.
