Berlin - In a unique project, scientists and environmentalists managed the 10,000. To find garden sleepers in Germany. This discovery marks an important milestone in the search for the rare way and contributes to redefining the distribution area of the small rodents.
The “Garden Sleeper in Focus” project was launched a few years ago to grasp the spread of the endangered garden sleepers across population. The general public took part in the search, which now achieved the impressive number of 10,000 reports. The search for traces led to a clean garden sleeper, which was spotted in Idar-Oberstein (Rhineland-Palatinate).
"We are absolutely overwhelmed by the attendance of the population and the success of the campaign," says Sven Büchner, expert in garden sleepers. "The great response shows how much people are enthusiastic about this small, worthy of protect."
As part of the project, all of the reports received by trained experts are checked in order to be able to make a scientific evaluation. About two thirds of the reported sightings were confirmed, while a small number of reports could not be assessed.
The garden sleeper was originally widespread in most federal states in southern and central Germany, but today it can no longer be found in many places. His habitat has concentrated on the southwest of Germany, where it can be found primarily in urban areas. Furthermore, the species was also sighted in the mountain regions such as the Harz, Fichtelgebirge and Bavarian Forest. Based on this findings, protective measures are now being implemented. The “Garden Sleeper in Focus” project was funded as part of the Federal Program for Biological Diversity with the Federal Ministry of Environment. It is a joint research project by the Federal Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND), the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research.
