Next Friday, August 16, 2024, a special ceremony for the honor of the Croatian poet Marko Marulić will take place. On the occasion of his 574th birthday, the representative for partnerships, Anke Pätzold, the Croatian embassy secretary and consul, Tino Klarić Kukuz, as well as representatives: inside of the Croatian community at 10 a.m. on the Marko-Marulić statue on Julius-Morgenroth-Platz will come together to put down flowers.

The majestic three meter high statue of the poet and humanist was created by Croatian artist Prof. Slavomir Drinković and was presented to the district on May 27, 2000 as a gift. This gift came about through a cooperation between the city of Split, the German-Croatian Society of Berlin-Brandenburg and the Croatian community of Berlin to celebrate the long-term partnership.

Marko Marulić, born in 1450 in Split and died in 1524, was an important thinker of the European Renaissance and left an extensive literary heritage. This year his day of death marks the 500th anniversary, which makes this occasion particularly important. Marulić wrote theological and philosophical texts, but also reports on his time. Although most of his works were written on Latin, he also wrote significant texts in Croatian and a few in Italian.

The memorial ceremony will bring important personalities together to honor Marko Marulić's legacy and to emphasize the importance of his work for Croatian and European culture.
