Fu Berlin defends itself against planned refugee container village

On the fallow unibles on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, the Senate plans to build a container village for 260 refugees. However, this encounters resistance, especially at the Free University, since it had provided the site for the construction of a building for teaching and research. The university felt over and criticized that the university management was not included in the decisions. Although the FU is fundamentally willing to support refugee people, she pointed out that the site will be needed for its own construction work from 2023.

The FU proposed to use empty buildings from the Federal Real Estate Agency near Refugee accommodation. The Senate, represented by refugee coordinator Broemme, argues that refugees could be accommodated there as long as the university site remains unused. It was found that the area is urgently needed for construction work and no alternative areas are available.

The Senate decided to build 16 other container villages in Berlin at the end of March because there was a lack of living space for refugees. These are to be built on different fallow land and parking spaces. Many new locations are planned, especially in the city's eastern districts. Despite the need for further accommodation for refugees, there is resistance and discussions about the distribution of the locations.

The plans for the construction of a container village on the universe area in Steglitz-Zehlendorf have triggered mockery on the net. Some users criticize the free university for their resistance because it usually presents itself as cosmopolitan. It is pointed out that the decisions in wealthy districts more often encounter resistance and that the process of accommodation of refugees is discussed controversially.
