Femicides in Berlin: Two tragic knife attacks shake the city

In the past few days, Berlin has to struggle with two borderline crimes that not only cause grief, but also anger. Two women were killed in shocking knife attacks, which are stunned in their brutality and the backgrounds. Another incident that focuses on the dangers of women comes into focus.

The first tragedy occurred in Zehlendorf on Wednesday evening. A 36-year-old mother who had four children was presumably killed by her ex-husband. According to the Attorney General, Murder is in the low motivation, and the 50-year-old man is now in custody. Previously, the woman had taken care of her security and obtained a violence disposal that prohibited him from approaching her. This shows how far legal measures often lag behind reality when it comes to protection against violence in relationships.

Another brutally ending incident

On Friday evening there was another knife attack: a 28-year-old was found in the hallway of an apartment building in the Friedrichsfelde district. Despite immediate resuscitation attempts, the woman died in the hospital a little later. The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was quickly arrested, and here too it is still unclear what relationship between him and the killed existence. According to reports, the woman had two children, which gives the entire incident an even more tragic dimension.

At the same time, an attempted homicide was carried out in the Reinickendorf district against a 38-year-old woman who lived in an apartment with her two children. It was attacked by a man with a kitchen knife, but fortunately it was able to escape. The children ran onto the street and alerted the police, who caught the perpetrator in flagranti. Here, too, it turned out that the accused was connected to the woman, which raises the question of how often such tragic incidents arise from interpersonal relationships.

The Berlin Federal Minister of Family Affairs Lisa Paus expressed himself horrified by the incidents. She found that Germany had a massive violence problem against women and called for urgent measures to protect affected women. "We not only need a security package against terrorist stimulus, but also for the prevention and protection of women from violence," emphasized Paus and announced a law of violence.

These incidents illustrate an alarming reality. Femicide, the killing of women because of their gender, is still considered too often occurring. This is often done by partners or ex-partners who are driven by jealousy or the feeling of loss. The sisters and mothers of victims are often left behind, even if they have taken all legal steps to protect themselves.

The Berlin judiciary Felor Badenberg also called for consequences to minimize violent attacks against women. "We finally have to do something about these brutal murders of men of women," she said, linking the deeds with a deeper hatred of women who remains undetected in our society.
