Bicycle police in Berlin: 155 bikes pulled out of circulation

An internal letter from the State Police Directorate revealed that during driving safety training in East Berlin, a police officer found a problem with the front wheel brake on his bike. It turned out that the hub was shot off the front wheel, which led to a dangerous defect.

Due to these security risks, all 87 bicycles of this brand that were procured between 2020 and 2021 were pulled out of traffic and a ban on use. In addition, 68 bicycles of another brand were also subject to a ban on use, since an increased risk of falling was found due to insufficient laying of switching trains and brake lines. The police have agreed with the supplier to fix the defects.

The restriction of the bicycle strips is expected to have a significant impact on patrol services and traffic surveillance, since there is currently no adequate replacement for the 155 bicycles drawn out of circulation. The State Police Directorate emphasizes that the security of the bicycle policemen has top priority and that all measures are taken to ensure that the bicycles are ready for use without endangering the officials.
