flood protection project in Neuwied receives federal funding

The Federal Ministry of Building has decided to promote the revitalization of the dike crown in Neuwied as the "national project of urban construction". With a promise of 4.5 million euros from Berlin, the venerable building is completely renovated. In addition, a “center to deal with climate change and its effects on urbanity in Central Europe”.

The dike crown, originally created in the 1930s in connection with the construction of the dike, has been empty since 2010 after the last tenant had moved out. Due to the lack of funding opportunities for gastronomic use and the enormous need for renovation, it was decided to convert the building into a museum. The city plans an interactive exhibition on the consequences of climate change, especially with regard to heavy rain and flood events.

The revitalization of the dike crown is an important step for Neuwied, since the building has a large identification function for the city's citizens. The promotion by the Federal Ministry of Building enables the historical building fabric to maintain and at the same time create a modernized, informative facility. The redesign of the dike crown will also complement the already successfully redesigned dike bank promenade and become a unique piece of urban design in Central Europe.

A significant part of the project is the general renovation of the listed building, since it has been improperly changed in the post -war period. The city of Neuwied plans to contribute about half a million euros in their own funds to ensure the implementation of the project. Mayor Jan Einig is happy about the funding commitment and plans to advance the specific planning in consultation with the funding. The decision should be available by the end of the year and the execution planning should begin.
