Brandenburg state parliament elects new control commission - AfD excluded!
Potsdam, Deutschland - On May 22, 2025, the Brandenburg state parliament occupied the new Parliamentary Control Commission (PKK). This control instance plays a crucial role in monitoring the work of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, a state institution that acts under strict legal framework and is part of the democratic system. The PKK is equipped with far -reaching powers, including inspection in files that affect the classification of extremist groups or parties.
Chairman of the new Commission remains Uwe Adler from the SPD. In the first ballot, however, Adler received only 42 votes and thus missed the required majority of 43 votes among the 86 MPs present. His competitor, the AfD candidate Daniel Münschke, received 38 votes and also left out. In the second ballot, Adler succeeded with 44 votes against the 41 votes after he received the votes of the entire government coalition, while two SPD MPs were absent. In addition to Uwe Adler, André von Ossowski (BSW) and Rainer Genilke (CDU) were elected.
composition of the PKK
The new PKK consists of a total of three MPs:
- Uwe Adler (SPD)
- André von Ossowski (BSW)
- Rainer Genilke (CDU)
During the last legislative period, the Commission made up five members. The change in the composition means that the AfD is no longer represented, since, according to the settlement decision, only one of the three mandates of the opposition is due. This means that the AfD candidate Münschke, despite his 38 votes, cannot enter the Commission.
tasks and powers of the PKK
The tasks of the PKK are diverse and of great importance for the parliamentary control of the protection of the constitution. The state government must inform this institution about the general activity, the position of the position and special processes. It also enables reporting on individual cases at the request of the Commission. Together with the G10 Commission, which acts independently and deals with restrictions on the letter, postal and telecommunications secret, the PKK ensures intensive and continuous control of the protection of the constitution.
Uwe Adler, who was also one of the greatest critics of the resigned Interior Minister Katrin Lange in the past legislative period, takes on a key role in the new PKK. Adler's nomination was also accompanied by conversations about possible losses of votes, but he secured the government's support because absenting members of the SPD strengthened his position.
The election illustrates the current political landscape in Brandenburg and the importance of the control of intelligence activities. The protection of the constitution, as a state institution, is subject to law and legislation and is monitored by the PKK in the fulfillment of its tasks. The need for this control is underlined by the social challenges with which Brandenburg is confronted. The future of parliamentary control remains of great relevance.
