Berlin has recorded the highest migration since 1991 - number of immigration at record high
In 2022Berlin recorded a total migration of 84,584 people. Both the total number of immigration (235,365) and the migration gain have been the highest values for the federal capital since 1991. This emerges from current data from the State Office for Statistics Berlin-Brandenburg.
This migration gain is 95,953 people on griefs from abroad. Specifically, 3,437 Germans from Berlin moved away, while 99,390 foreigners moved to the capital. About half of this immigration from abroad come from Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have fled to Berlin since the outbreak of the Russian attack war. However, not all of them stayed in the city, many were distributed to other federal states.
At the same time, Berlin continues to lose the population to the adjacent Brandenburg. However, these migratory losses have decreased slightly in the past two years. However, twice as many Berliners still move to Brandenburg as the other way around. As a result, Berlin lost a total of 11,012 people to the surrounding area and 5,362 people to other metropolitan areas.
According to the statistics office, all districts of Berlin record migration gains. The districts of Mitte (9.907), Treptow-Köpenick (9.699) and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (9,656) have the highest influx excess.
These current figures prove the attractiveness of Berlin as a place of residence, especially for people from abroad. The migration gain shows that Berlin, as a cosmopolitan and cosmopolitan city, continues to record a large influx. However, the departure of Berliners to other regions, especially to Brandenburg, is also a factor that must be taken into account. The exact reasons for the hikes are not included in the data, but they could be due to economic, social or personal factors.
Overall, the numbers reflect the dynamic growth of Berlin, which continues to attract a versatile and internationally characterized population. It remains to be seen how this trend will continue in the coming years.
